The small town of Ashenwell has been plagued by a beast since its inception. Every season the water from the well recedes and only returns once the beast within has tasted blood. It has become known as the Tithing, and to keep things fair, the Wardens of the Well draw a name at random to be sacrificed. 

But the process is far from fair.  

This season, they've taken Eryx, but Izara won't stand by and watch her fiancé be fed to the depths. She knows the truth, that the council's so-called lottery is a lie, a tool to silence those who dare to question their rule while they disguise their cruelty as duty.
